Existing. (On the Verge.) — January 2009

“Existing” was published as one of the first stories for On The Verge., a multimedia magazine at the Missouri Journalism School.

“I do not exist.”

Like a brand or a stamp, the words stand out in bold type on Jonathan McDowell’s right arm every time his t-shirt sleeve creeps up the tricep enough to show them.

The phrase is more than a cryptic reminder. It’s a family motto. To McDowell and his newborn’s mother, Danni Turner, it sums up what holds their new and unexpected family together.

Bob’s House was my first independent documentary, filmed and produced in Columbia, Missouri.

Columbia residents traveling south of town wonder about an eerie glow in the woods near the road. But all they have to do is walk a few yards into the woods to find a friendly team of vagrants, squatting on unclaimed land, smoking cigarettes and cooking canned chili over a propane heater. Bob and Charley don’t have a plan for life, and they’re fine with that for now, they say. This is a peek into their lives as the mysterious drive-by glimpses on Providence Road.
